140 INDIA'S HYDROCARBON OUTLOOK 2024-2025
8 8.1 Introduction
8.1.1 Energy and Ecology: Navigating
Environmental Governance in India's Oil &
Gas Sector
India’s oil and gas sector is often hailed as the
lifeblood of industrial progress and national
Environmental security. With nearly 85% of its crude oil
requirements imported, the country’s energy
and Regulatory security critically depends on tapping domestic
reserves found in the deserts of Rajasthan, the
forests of Assam, and the deep waters of the
Oversight in Krishna-Godavari basin.
Yet, the story of hydrocarbon development is
India’s Upstream not just one of exploration and engineering,
it is equally a narrative of environmental
responsibility. The challenge lies in ensuring
Oil & Gas Sector that the “black gold” beneath our feet does not
tarnish the green canopy above.
We do not inherit the earth from our
ancestors; we borrow it from our children.

Environmental governance plays a pivotal role
in ensuring that petroleum operations ranging
from seismic surveys and exploratory drilling to
production and pipeline transport are conducted
responsibly, with minimal adverse impact
on ecosystems and communities. A robust
environmental framework not only safeguards
biodiversity and natural resources but also
builds public trust, ensures compliance with
