Data Management:
As per the petroleum and natural gas amendment rules 2006, every E&P operator in India is obliged to provide all data elements pertaining to the entire E&P value chain to Gov of India. This includes but not limited to geological, geophysical, petrophysical, geochemical, log, map, production data, tapes, cores, cuttings, other interpretaion and analytical reports etc.
DGH being the nodal agency of Ministry of Petroleum and natural gas on upstream E&P affairs, has started receiving E&P data from operators gradually subsequent to NELP regimes. Further one major role of DGH is to store and disseminate this precious oil field data of India.
It is widely accepted today that E&P dataset is essentially a national asset. This is quite true in view of the ever increasing technological advancement in the field of data processing, data interpretation etc. Even age-old E&P dataset might give new results in view of new technological infrastructure. That is why safeguarding national E&P data has become a prime area of focus for DGH recently.
Below is a brief account of different data classes available with DGH.
Bulk Seismic Data Management :
Currently DGH is maintaining a offline digital data library to archive different seismic data received from the operators. These include both processed and raw data received in different media like 3590, 3490, 3592, 8 mm Exabyte, LTO etc. The above cartridge information are categorised and viewable based on an Oracle based web application modules.
Structured Data Management :
Currently different application modules are in the process of development/deployment and testing on Oracle 10g database with .net based web based applications to categorise, catalogue and compile various structured data and meta dataset sets relating to cultural, geological, production, reservoir, well header, logging meta data etc.
Unstructured & Physical Data Management :
DGH is currently having a dedicated data room to store all unstructured and physical data elements like well completion reports, different study reports, analytical reports etc. They are scientifically catalogued and maintained by well. In view of the growing importance of national E&P data and these E&P data being India's national asset, DGH has envisioned an ambitious plan for setting up of a National Data Repository for India. The proposed NDR will primarily safeguard national E&P data asset. Besides this will further streamline all associated procedures,policies and workflows pertaining to data submission, data cataloguing and data viewing by respective operators. Additionally this will facilitate a common window for all concerned quarters pertaining to E&P domain including industries, government agencies, academia and common people. The project has been thaught on an innovative Build-Operate-Populate and Lease concept.
National Data Repository (NDR):
Government of India in envisaging on an ambitious project to set up a National Knowledge Hub (NKH) alternatively called as National Knowledge Centre (NKC) in E&P area in coming few years. The components of NKH/NKC will be

Objective/goals of National Data Repository (NDR):.
The proposed NDR will primarily safeguard national E&P data asset and shall help and promote exploration and production activities in India. Besides, this will further streamline all associated procedures, policies and workflows pertaining to data submission, data cataloguing and data viewing, data retrieval and data trading for all concerned quarters pertaining to E&P domain including stack holders, industries, government agencies, academia and research communities.
NDR is expected to store and maintain hydrocarbon exploration & production data in a safe and reusable manner, in perpetuity. The data shall be preserved in accordance with generally accepted NDR standards, and made available to entitled users.
Having an NDR for India will enhance prospects of petroleum exploration and facilitate the Bidding Rounds by improving the availability of quality data. With this action, India will be joining the league of countries that have an NDR and can compete effectively in the hydrocarbon exploration and production sector. DGH now envisions a move beyond the NELP, towards “Open Acreage” approach with OALP.
